Professor Kohler (pictured above) is founder of the Green Roof Research Center at the University of Applied Sciences in Neubrandenburg, Germany. He is also a leading founder of the
World Green Infrastructure Network
He has cooperated with research colleague’s world-wide, in Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, China, USA, and Canada. Main research interests are focused on the eco-effects of the green roof infrastructure in contact to buildings. Sub-topics in this field are biodiversity studies of green roofs, urban climate modification and water retention as well as storm water management by green roofs.
Professsor Kohler is a member of: Federal Landscape architecture organisation (BDLA), a member of the national working group for green roof guidelines in Germany (FLL); a life member of “Green Roofs for Healthy City); He is also speaker of the German FBB, responsible for foreign affairs (National Green building Association), and is a member of the Executive Board European Green Roof Association. He is vice president (EFB 2005-beginning 2008), and chairperson of World Green Roof Infrastructure Network since 2006.
About World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN): From seven countries originally – Australia, Brazil, Canada. France, Germany, Mexico and the United States – agreement came on May 1, 2008, for a Toronto, Canada-based organisation. Membership now stands at 15 countries, with another five expected to soon join.
Professional activities:
- 1981 – 1990: Scientist; Institute of Ecology, Berlin. (Main topics: Urban ecology; Green facades and Green roof systems. Teaching in the academic education of Landscape planner
- 1990 - 1994: Executive Director of the Research Centre of Landscape Ecology, Bremen. Topics: Environmental impact assessment studies and restoration projects during Harbour development and extension planning. Restoration planning of wetland areas.
- Since 1994 Professor of Landscape ecology at the University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg
Main research interests are:
- Urban ecology; Green roofs and living walls
- Historic parks and gardens in NE Germany
- Golf course planning
